| Our interest in
canine breeding and genetics began 35 years ago with a Great
Dane. When our first fawn Dane bitch was bred to a black and
produced blue puppies, a whole new fascinating world opened up
to us. |
|
 |
Later we purchased a
black female Great Dane puppy from a 'reputable' breeder in the
Lower Mainland, BC. This first time experience with puppy
purchasing in Canada taught us what a breeder should not be.
|
| I thought the new
Great Dane pup
looked young, but we were told that the 8 week old pup had been
rejected by her mum and that was why she was so small and was
also the reason for the scars on her head. Mum was apparently
very rough with the pups and injured the skin on this pups head.
That little girl pup touched
our hearts and so we brought home our first Canadian born Great
Dane puppy |
 |
 |
The very next morning we
woke to one very sick puppy and poop everywhere. A trip to
the vet that same day, and we learned the bad news. Turns
out our pup was more like 6 weeks old than 8, and she was riddled with
worms. The scars on her head was from an infestation of mites
and the worst of all, was that she had rickets. Rickets is
a bone disease from malnourishment. The weak leg bones begin to
bend, causing bandy legs and other problems to internal organs. |
| Our GD pup was
eventually cured and with a premium well balanced dog food and
lots of supplements, she grew into a charming dog with straight
legs and a dead on gait. We entered her in a CKC Sanction Match where she won a Group 1st and Best Puppy in
Match. |
 |
 |
Our problems did not
end there, as we could not get the pup CKC registered. The
breeder did not register the litter and would not register the
pups. Complaints to the CKC was
a waste of time and they were not helpful at all.
This taught us the
heartbreak a puppy buyer can experience when they choose the
wrong breeder. We vowed to breed and sell only healthy pups to
the best of our ability.
|
| We began a search
for a CKC registered pup and during our search we found these
beautiful white dogs from Siberia. We fell in love with
their personalities, quirky characters and their loving nature. Very different from
our beautiful regal Great Danes, we knew that
Samoyeds were for us. |
